Tray sealing specialist Proseal America of Richmond, Virginia, and Idaho-based co-packing company Hudson Blaise are partnering to bring the environmentally friendly Halopack® tray format to the North American food market. Hudson Blaise will begin production of the trays at the start of January 2021, using the Proseal SKR™ tray forming machine to enable these to be assembled on-line for a fast and efficient tray-forming, filling and sealing operation.
Halopack is the first fully hermetic cardboard tray that is suitable for both Modified Atmosphere Packing (MAP) and cool chain processing, with high barrier properties that maintain product quality and extend shelf life. It is manufactured from renewable or recycled cardboard, and the film can be easily separated from the paperboard to enable the majority of the pack to be recycled.
Available in both standard and custom sizes, the tray can be made dual-ovenable (meaning suited to microwave and conventional oven) and compatible with all seal formats available on Proseal’s extensive range of tray sealers, including atmospheric seal, gas flush, hermetic shrink, vacuum gas, and skin packaging.. This makes Halopack ideal for a wide variety of foods, including fresh meat, fish and poultry, snacks, salads, prepared fruit and vegetables, and ready meals.
For maximum branding and personalization, the tray can be specified with full color and double-sided printing, using a patented process that protects against ink-cardboard and close proximity contamination.
Another benefit of Halopack is that the base is constructed out of a single piece of board, whereas other similar trays on the market feature a folded construction. This folded construction has the potential for food to hang in the film through the bottom of the tray, particularly in high moisture applications.
The Proseal SKR machine can be combined with the company’s range of tray sealers, with the SKR erecting each Halopack tray at the start of the line prior to filling and sealing, for a complete in-line process. This compares to other tray variants which require the trays to be assembled off-line, putting pressure on available factory space, and potentially slowing down production.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Proseal to offer food customers such an innovative packaging solution,” commented Cody Griffith, Owner and President of Hudson Blaise. “Halopack combines effective food preservation with high impact presentation and strong sustainability benefits, with Proseal equipment ensuring a fast and efficient filling and packing operation and delivering the high-quality seals for which the company is renowned.”
